Listen to "Man Jiang Hong" and perform cataract surgery on Chairman Mao.
Tang Youzhi and the Guangdong post-school students Lu Yubo (first from the right), Yang Zhimin (first from the left) and disciple Ou Yang (second from the left) who came to Beijing to ask questions.
In 1975, when Chinese people saw Mao Zedong in a news documentary, they didn’t know that Chairman Mao was basically blind because of cataract. It was he who used the golden needle to remove obstacles and let Chairman Mao’s left eye see the light again.
Tang Youzhi, the 87-year-old honorary president of the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a master of traditional Chinese medicine, is still making house calls. He is a master of traditional Chinese medicine ophthalmology in China, excavating and promoting the ancient Chinese medicine ophthalmology "Needle Obstacle Removal", inventing "Cataract Needle Pulling Out" and establishing a modern Chinese medicine ophthalmology hospital. He has treated eye diseases for President Kim Il Sung of North Korea, President Penm Nouth of Cambodia and President Wahid of Indonesia, and enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad.
When interviewed in Beijing recently, Tang Lao was personable, with a straight suit and a kind smile. Speaking of the unforgettable legendary experience more than 30 years ago, he is still vivid.

The way to success
The first batch of "Middle School West" produced two masters of traditional Chinese medicine in a dormitory.
Lv Yubo: Tang Lao, when it comes to ophthalmology, especially ophthalmic surgery, people often think that it is a matter of western medicine and has nothing to do with Chinese medicine. However, you can use modern medical diagnosis and treatment technology to develop ophthalmology of traditional Chinese medicine and build a special hospital. What is your secret?
Tang Youzhi: All modern diagnosis and treatment technologies are the achievements of human natural science and should be shared by all kinds of medicine. In order to develop Chinese medicine, it should be combined with modern science and technology and reformed and innovated, so as to continue to benefit mankind.
I was born in Hangzhou in 1926. I studied painting with my eldest brother, who was a painter, since I was a child, and then I came to Wuxi National Studies Museum, Shanghai Branch, specializing in classical literature. In 1942, he was introduced by his eldest brother friend, monk Shi Piao, and met Mr. Lu Nanshan, a famous doctor of ophthalmology in Shanghai. He saw with his own eyes that Mr. Lu treated patients, which made a difference. I made up my mind to worship him as a teacher. He is open-minded and does not exclude western medicine. He is an advocate of innovation in ophthalmology of traditional Chinese medicine. He is the first to use modern scientific instruments such as ophthalmoscope, slit lamp and microscope for examination and diagnosis in China. Later he married his daughter Livzon to me.
In the process of studying medicine, I want to know more about how various tissues and systems get sick and how good they are, so I thought of studying modern medicine. In 1952, I applied for the Beijing Medical College, and studied western medicine systematically for five years. I was the first batch of Chinese medicine doctors who were "learning from the west" in China. Lu Guangshen and I are college roommates. In 2009, we were awarded the first "Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine" in China. Everyone said that it is really rare for you to have two masters in one dormitory.
