In this team relying on the sky to cast swords, there is a high-spirited scientific and technological expert, blazing with anger, who always pays attention to the development of missile technology; He walked in a hurry, racing against time to cast the country’s heavy weapon; He was brilliant and took the lead in overcoming several technical problems. He joined the army for 26 years and won more than 20 various scientific and technological awards. He is Chen Deming, a Gobi soldier and missile test expert known as "Iron Man Chen".

A movie gave birth to the dream of "fighting for the country"

In 1986, Chen Deming, who was still in high school, watched a movie. In the film, the magnificent picture of China’s first long-range launch vehicle roared off shocked him, and he quietly buried a dream of fighting for his country. For this dream, he applied for the only National University of Defense Technology that offered aerospace dynamics and flight test.

When he graduated, Chen Deming declined the opportunity to stay in school to work, and resolutely embarked on a train bound for the northwest desert, only because of his love for the missile cause. "The vast Gobi Desert, sporadic camel thorns, dilapidated old barracks, and more than 60 people in the technical room use an old computer." This is Chen Deming’s impression when he first arrived at the base 26 years ago. "This is a place that is not suitable for human habitation!" The comrades in the same industry complained. Chen Deming said: "This is a sacred place. There are national defense undertakings that the motherland needs, and it will certainly be fertile ground for us to make contributions."

There is only a desolate desert without a desolate life.

"Only desolate desert, no desolate life. Since you have chosen, you must be a determined walker. " Chen De made up his mind to take root and do a good job. After encountering the embarrassment of not knowing what the "launch window" is, Chen Deming began to study almost crazily, read professional books and consult old experts. A month later, he independently calculated the "launch window" and wrote a scientific paper. During the mission, Chen Deming found that a missile weapon test only verified one target, and a missile weapon model needed multiple tests, which required a long period and large investment. After careful analysis and research, he boldly suggested to verify multiple targets at the same time in one experiment, and the result was successful. This test method has been used to this day, saving the test funds and speeding up the process of missile weapons and equipment troops.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the anti-missile project settled in the base, and Chen Deming was hired as a project expert to take the lead in tackling the test technology of the anti-missile range. Due to the tight time and heavy tasks, Chen Deming entered the realm of selflessness in those days, and the alarm clock was always set at 11: 30 at night. The purpose was to remind himself that it was time to go home from work. He even worked overtime for three days and three nights in order to draw up a test plan, and finally fainted in the office. After nearly a thousand days and nights of hard work, Chen Deming and his team drafted hundreds of experimental documents, and achieved the demonstration goal of "building a system, forming two abilities and breaking through three key technologies". On January 11th, 2010, the first test was carried out as scheduled. As the commander gave the order, the interceptor was like a sword drawn out of its sheath and stabbed the sky, hitting the target with one blow. The success of the anti-missile test in the first battle has made great contributions to the overtaking and leapfrog development of China’s anti-missile technology in corners.

Anti-missile is a solid shield of strategic defense and an important bargaining chip in the game of big countries. Chen Deming has been studying the technology of missile orbit determination and prediction unremittingly. In his veins, there are thousands of test data, dense flight curves and accurate landing position. On the eve of the Spring Festival in 2013, a certain missile broke down during the altitude flight test, and the wreckage was missing. The research unit approached Chen Deming for help, and he successfully solved the problem in only two days.

Over the past 26 years, Chen Deming has participated in the flight test mission of hundreds of missile weapons, and has taken the lead in completing more than 10 major research projects, making outstanding contributions to accelerating the construction of new combat forces and upgrading the new combat capability of our army.

Devoted to scientific research, indifferent to fame and fortune

In Chen Deming’s spiritual world, there is no word "fame and fortune". In 2008, the news of Chen Deming’s resignation from the administrative post caused a sensation throughout the base. In fact, this is the third time that he has resigned as the director of the technical office, in order to devote himself to scientific research. As early as 2003, Chen Deming expressed his intention to quit his administrative post to the leaders, but the leaders refused. Chen Deming persisted for another two years, but his desire to concentrate on scientific research became stronger and stronger. At the end of 2006, he offered to resign again and was not allowed. More than a year later, he submitted his resignation report to the organization again, expressing his determination to concentrate on academic research. Seeing that he was so persistent, the leader finally approved his request.

Over the years, Chen Deming has faced many different choices. In 2010, a well-known university in China invited Chen Deming to be a professor, and promised him generous research and living conditions. In addition, many scientific research institutes inside and outside the military also enthusiastically offered him "olive branches", but all of them were declined by Chen Deming. He said: "My value is in the desert and in the shooting range."

Chen Deming often said that there is no rest in innovation. Over the years, Chen Deming, who is obsessed with scientific research and exploration, has a habit, that is, he always likes to ask, "Why? Can there be another way to answer? " Aiming at the problem of low real-time utilization rate of measurement data in missile weapon test range, he creatively studied and proposed free fusion technology based on independent measurement elements, which provided a technical basis for making full use of real-time measurement data in the range. In order to meet the needs of anti-missile operations, he began to study the technology of group target orbit determination and prediction several years ago, which provided reliable technical means to solve the problem of group target orbit determination and prediction … This innovation has played a decisive role in making the sword of a big country fly farther and the heavy weapon of the country hit more accurately.

"I can’t remember how many flight test evaluation methods and evaluation reports I have completed." Chen Deming said that he was never satisfied with copying the documents he had drawn up before, and even the evaluation methods he proposed in his early days, he never "painted a tiger as a cat" in practical application. "This is like a spinning top. Only by constantly giving external forces can the top keep turning."

In the past 26 years, from being ignorant of missile weapon tests, to becoming a technical expert, and then to being the leader of the scientific and technological innovation team, Chen Deming has been striving to build a "sword of the country" and a shield of peace.
